Understanding the CBT Model: How Thoughts, Feelings, and Habits Connect
By Dana Waknin, MS, LPC • Blissful Mindset Healing (Frisco, TX & Texas Telehealth)
Many people have heard the phrase cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), yet still wonder what it actually looks like in an everyday therapy session. At its heart, CBT is built on a clear, practical insight: the way we interpret a situation shapes how we feel emotionally and physically, which in turn influences how we respond.
Why Psychoeducation Comes First
When you are in the middle of an anxious spiral, someone telling you to "just think positively" is not helpful. That is why CBT leans on psychoeducation first. In our sessions, we take the time to unpack how the CBT model works so you can see the mechanics behind automatic thoughts, core beliefs, and nervous system reactions.
Because my approach is person-centered, we never rush this stage. You learn the model at your own pace in a warm, conversational way before we ever ask you to test those tools in high-stress situations.
Applying CBT to Real Life
Once the model clicks for you, you start noticing patterns in real time. Instead of being swept away by self-doubt or worst-case scenarios, you gain a practical pause button. We work together to ask honest, thoughtful questions about whether an anxious thought is telling you the whole truth, and what small behavioral shift can help you feel grounded again.
