Why We Build Emotional Regulation Before Diving Into Childhood Trauma

By Dana Waknin, MS, LPC • Blissful Mindset Healing (Frisco, TX & Texas Telehealth)

One of the most common fears people have before starting therapy is that they will be asked to unpack their most painful memories during the very first appointment. If you have lived through childhood trauma or difficult past relationships, the idea of walking into a room with a stranger and immediately laying everything on the table can feel overwhelming.

In my practice at Blissful Mindset Healing, we take a very different route. Using a person-centered approach alongside cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), you always dictate the pace of our work.

Starting With the "Here and Now"

When we first begin working together, our focus is on what is interfering with your day-to-day life right now. Maybe you are dealing with constant anxiety at work, trouble sleeping, feeling on edge in your relationship, or an exhausting loop of overthinking.

Stabilizing the present comes first for a simple reason: it is very hard to do deep reflection on the past when your daily routine feels like it is on fire.

Building Your Toolkit Through CBT Psychoeducation

Once we understand what is weighing on you today, we use CBT psychoeducation to help you build a clear grasp of how your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and habits interact. Rather than rushing through worksheets, we take this at your speed so you genuinely understand the model and feel comfortable applying it to real-life moments.

Along the way, we pay close attention to emotional regulation. Emotional regulation does not mean shutting your feelings off; it means knowing how to ground yourself and return to a sense of safety when strong emotions show up.

Moving Into Deeper Trauma Work When You Are Ready

Being person-centered means I pay close attention to your cues and check in with you honestly about your readiness. I will gently nudge you slightly out of your comfort zone when it serves your growth, without pushing too far. Once your day-to-day anxiety is more manageable and you feel safe, comfortable, and emotionally regulated, we can move forward into deeper childhood or past trauma work together.
