Asking the Hard Questions Without Triggering Self-Judgment

By Dana Waknin, MS, LPC • Blissful Mindset Healing (Frisco, TX & Texas Telehealth)

Many clients tell me they tried therapy in the past and felt like their therapist simply smiled, nodded, and asked, "And how did that make you feel?" While feeling heard is essential, most people seeking cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) also want honest feedback and real direction.

Warm, Conversational, and Direct

In my work at Blissful Mindset Healing, my style is warm, conversational, and direct in character. I like challenging my clients and asking the hard questions, but how those questions are asked makes all the difference.

When a question feels judgmental, our natural human instinct is to put our guard up and get defensive. When that same question is asked in a genuinely warm, non-judgmental space, your nervous system stays calm enough to pause and really think.

Curiosity Over Criticism

Together, we look at the protective habits you built earlier in life with respect for why they started, while honestly asking whether they are still helping you today. That combination of direct insight and genuine self-compassion is what builds lasting resilience.
